Grace and peace to you, my Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
Without a doubt, we are living in times of an external health threat as well as a deepening social divide, concerns that rear at the very fabric of our lives. There are some who would like to pit these two concerns against one another, furthering the friction that we feel in our social interactions with one another. More than ever we need to turn to God for guidance; only in and through God's wisdom, will we be able to see our way past the divisions and the hurt. With humility and gentleness we may bear the current times in love and patience as we place our trust in Christ Jesus, "making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace" (Ephesians 4:3).
In the unity of the Spirit, may we all profess a bond of understanding of God and one another by sharing in these words from Ephesians 4:4-6: "There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and father of all, who is above all and through all and in all." Only in our appeal to the one God will we see the way to lessen the divide and bring healing to our world, a healing made possible through the spiritual gifts we receive from God in Christ: :And each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ's gift" (4:7).
We have been given these gifts, each and all, "to equip the saints for the work of ministry/service, for building up the body of Christ, UNTIL all of us come to the unity of faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ" (4:12-13). We are also warned to not be thrown and blown about by the winds of deceit and divide, by trickery and deceitful craftiness (4:14).
In Christ, we are able to turn to the truth in love as we "grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ" (4:15). In him will we be able to be joined and knit together, as each part is working properly. Again, we are cautioned, "Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not make room for the devil" (4:26-27). rather, "be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you" (4:32).
May we walk together in faith, hope, and love. Pastor John
